We hope that you will come and join us when you are in Roseburg, either as a visitor traveling through Oregon or as a new resident of Douglas County. We are looking forward to meeting you and welcoming you into our church family!
As a parish, we are dedicated to each other. We enjoy worship, learning, and fellowship. We are ministers to each other and to our community. And we love to have fun together, as these pictures show. Below the picture are links to other parish activities. If you are new to the Episcopal Tradition, or are just learning about Christianity, click here for more information.
Animal blessing at the collegeBlessing of the Animals
On Sunday October 2, 2005 we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis with a blessing of the animals in church following the 9:30 am service, and again at Umpqua Community College at 2 p.m. Click here to see a picture display of these events. Also avilable are archives of the 2004 Blessing.
Parish Pumpkin Carving and Painting Party.
On 29 October, 2005 we had a party to carve and paint pumpkins for Halloween. Click here to see a picture display of the people carving and painting their scary (and not so scary) pumpkins.
Stir Up Sunday.
On 27 November, 2005 we had our traditional "Stir Up Sunday"parish party. It was a wonderful craft fair, and we made Christmas cards, golt our faces painted, made tree decorations, book marks, and ate some of the world's finest homemade carmel corn. Click here to see pictures of people of all ages having fun!
On October 14-17, 2004 St. George's hosted Cursillo for the Diocese of Oregon. Check out the pictures and information.
Thanksgiving Parish Dinner.
Thanksgiving dessertsOn Thursday, November 24, 2005 we celebrated Thanksgiving in the parish hall. The celebration began with Holy Eucharist at noon in the church, followed by supper at 2 p.m. Clara Scallon and Betty Fretwell orchestrated a wonderful dinner. During the weeks preceding, parishioners worked together to decide on a menu. And all that good work paid off handsomly in a dinner of roast turkey, baked ham, potatoe salad, green salad, three kinds of cranberry dishes, baked potatoes, two kinds of mashed potatoes, four kinds of dressing, gallons of home-made gravy, olives, brocolli and cauliflower with dips, and sweet potatoes. And dessert was magnificent (see photo at right). Many parishioners and guests attended.
Parish Epiphany Party.
On Thursday, February 6, 2005 we celebrated the Epiphany with a soup supper and a worship service in the parish hall. It was a festival of lights and we commemorated the coming of the light to Roseburg in the founding of St. George's. Check out the pictures, and get the recipe for the soup!
On Maundy Thusday, March 25, 2005, we held an Agape supper immediately before our Maundy Thursday liturgy with footwashing an stripping of the altar and sanctuary. We dined on delicious soup prepared by the women of the church, plus wonderful bread, cheese, and spectacular fruit. The supper was wonderful, and as we ate, we remembered the last supper of Jesus through stories and songs. Our music director, Mr. David Jones was instrumental (pun intended) in making this supper a success. Pictures of the supper as we read stories and said prayers are shown below.
On August 7, 2005 we gathered for a single service at Rive Forks Park north of Roseburg for the annual picnic. About 78 people attended. We had a wonderful service, terrific food, and blesssed fellowship. The children and youth were led in a variety of games by our youth leaders. Click here for pictures.
Mystery Theatre Dinner Fundraiser
On July 30, 2006, the parish held its fourth fundraiser of the year. This was a Mystery Dinner Theatre, and no, the butler didn't do it. Check out the pictures of this event.
Together, these fundraisers have raised over $4000 for the parish, and proceeds from these events have been donated to the MassSae Girl's School in Monduli, Tanzania, and to charitable organizations in Roseburg including Habitat for Humanity, Battered Persons Advocacy, and Casa de Belen - a haven for young women and their children. These fundraisers have bonded the church together as a community, and rasied our awareness of social needs in our community and the world. And we have helped our parish too.
St. George's parish takes outreach seriously. But at the same time, we thoroughly enjoy providing for our community. In this section, we describe some of the work we have undertaken to improve our communities - both local and worldwide.
August 2005 School Supply Outreach Project.
For most students, school in Roseburg started on Tuesday, September 6. At the parish picnic on August 7, Fr. Bill announced the Second Annual St. George's Back To School Supply Drive to support the students at Rose Elemenetary School. We assembled a list of supplies for the first through fifth graders and attached it to grocery bags donated by the downstown Safeway Store. The bags were made available to parishioners attending services throughout August. On August 28 we had an ingathering of the bags of the collected supplies.
As the picture at the right shows, about 150 pounds of supplies were gathered - over 21 cubic feet - including items like back packs, paper, pencils, pens, crayons, scissors, facial tissues, washable markers, glue, glue sticks, pencil boxes, rulers, and the like. Clothing was also collected. On Monday, September 5, the supplies were delivered to Rose School.
It was through the immediate response and dedicated work and love of the parishioners of St. George's that made this supply drive successful. Most importantly, the principal of Rose School assured us that the supplies would be made immediately available to the less fortunate children of our community. Each and every member of St. George's is to be congratulated on a job well done. And we are grateful to Safeway Stores for again supporting this act of community stewardship. It is such a wonderful thing to see the love of Christ flow from our parish into the community.
Fall FISH Food Pantry Food Drive. Volunteers from St. George's participated in the October food drive. We collected over 2 and one-half tons of food and more than $1000. All of this will go to support the food pantry. Click here to see pictures of some of our volunteers in action! All of the parishioners of St. George's who volunteered, and those who contributed are to be congratulated for a job well done!
World Hunger Day, November 14, 2004. We observed World Hunger Day by the preaching and teaching of Fr. Bill Sassman who traveled to Roseburg from Baja, California. Fr. Sassman is a speaker for Food For The Poor, Inc. Check out the pictures of his visit, and get a glimpse of the wonderful work of Food For The Poor, Inc. in the Caribbean and Latin America. During Fr. Sassman's visit, the generous parishioners of St. George's responded by providing over $1360 in donations. Well done!!
Thanksgiving Baskets. Mrs. Thelma Sayers in cooperation with FISH coordinated the collection of funds to purchase food stuffs to fill 54 baskets that were provided to needy families of four or more living in the greater Roseburg area. Shopping wisely, Thelma was able to provide a turkey, stuffing mix, potatoes, gravy, canned green beans, canned corn, macaronni and cheese, cranberyy sauce, bread, and cookies for about $30 per basket.
The Rt. Rev. Johncy Itty, ninth Bishop of Oregon, issued a challenge to the parishes and missions of the diocese to prepare kits of school supplies for needy Children in Afghanistan. The people of St. George's responded to this challenge, and put together twelve kits. Seven of the school bags were hand sewn by Cheryl Seibel and Mary Carley. Betty Fretwell, Karla Roady, Camille Christensen, Faye Benham, Bill Hallcraft, and Janet McClellan, put the rest of the bags together. A picture of the school kits in front of the Altar at St George's is shown at the right.
Following their luncheon meeting on 10 November, the Episcopal Church Women of the Parish decorated the bags sewn by Cheryl and Mary. A close-up of the bags is shown at the left.
Many parishioners contributed the contents of the kits which included one pair of blunt scissors, pads or notebooks of ruled paper, one 30-centimeter ruler, one pencil sharpener, six pencils, one large eraser, twelve sheets colored construction paper, and one box of 24 crayons. The kits from St. George's were carried to Seaside, Oregon for the opening Eucharist at Diocesan Convention on November 18 where they, along with kits prepared by churches all over the Diocese were blessed by the Bishop. A total of 1227 kits were prepared as part of this outreach initiative from all corners of Western Oregon. The kits were boxed and mailed to Afghanistan at the conclusion of convention on 20 November. St. George's one again showed its generosity in helping the less fortunate of our brothers and sisters.
2004 Child and Youth Christmas Gift Program
Each year, the parishioners of St. George Parish shop, wrap, and give presents to children who might otherwise not receive Christmas presents due to economic or social factors. Mrs. Thelma Sayers of St. George parish has organized this project for the past five years. On December 12, the presents were brought to church and blessed, and we prayed for our "adopted children" as well as all other children in the world. The generosity and care for all members of our community was dramatically revealed as the presents were brought to church and set around the altar. Click here to see pictures and read the complete details about this parish project.
The August Blood Drives.
On August 17, 2005 and again on August 30, 2006 in cooperation with the American Red Cross, we held our annual blood drives. During the 2005 blood drive we collected 103% of our target of 30 units! Click here to see pictures and to read about this event. For information about donating blood go to https://www.givelife.org or call toll free 1 800 GIVELIFE.
